He asked us to take a look at the companies. Here are their descriptions:

VMD vs. GEC

Viemed Healthcare, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides in-home durable medical equipment and health care solutions to patients in the United States. The company offers respiratory services and related equipment, including non-invasive ventilators; bi-level, continuous, and automatic continuous positive airway pressure (PAP) machines; and oxygen units, as well as services of respiratory therapists; and respiratory disease management, neuromuscular care, and oxygen therapy services. It also provides in-home sleep apnea testing services to determine the existence of sleep apnea at home. In addition, the company leases non-invasive and invasive ventilators, PAP machines, percussion vests, oxygen concentrator units, and respiratory equipment, as well as sells medical equipment and/or patient medical services. Further, it provides therapy and counseling to patients in their homes using its technology. T

Great Elm Capital Group, Inc. operates in durable medical equipment, investment management, and real estate businesses. It distributes respiratory care equipment, including positive air pressure equipment and supplies, ventilators and oxygen equipment, as well as provides sleep study services; and rents medical equipment. The company also offers investment management services. In addition, it engages in the real estate business

While we have not dug deep into the companies, at first glance it looks like VMD is more of the pure play and is more profitable than GEC. Still, it looks like both companies only supply or rent equipment. We would consider companies that manufacture equipment to be more of a pure play option. However, we feel that both companies are worth putting on our radar as potential beneficiaries of strong home health care tailwinds that are only going to get stronger due to COVID-19.

If you are looking for more of a pure play on ventilators, $ELMD looks like an interesting candidate. The company makes and markets a home healthcare respiratory vest, SmartVest. As we pointed out in a Premium tweet, the company has begun marketing its SmartVest for COVID-19 patients. It’s unclear how significant this move will be for the company, but we presume COVID-19 could potentially expand and accelerate its long-term home healthcare market opportunity. You can see our original research on ELMD if you want to get familiar with the story.
